Knee Pain

The knee is a complex joint that relies heavily on muscles and ligaments for stability. It is the major weight bearing joint in our body and is composed of:

  • The Tibio-Femoral Joint: Between the thigh and lower leg
  • The Patello-Femoral Joint: Between the knee cap and the thigh
  • Muscles and Ligaments
  • Two ring shaped cartilage discs in the knee, called the meniscus

Knee pain can occur from direct trauma, repetitive use, pelvis or ankle dysfunction from old injuries or general wear & tear that comes with old age (osteoarthritis). Knee problems generally fall into two categories – Traumatic onset or Non-traumatic onset. Common symptoms include:

  • Sharp/ Severe Pain: Indicating inflammation
  • Aching, Stiffness and Dull Pain: Commonly associated with muscular problems
  • Restriction: Indicates a problem with the meniscus, often related to stiffness, or tightness, that can occur with ligament and muscular dysfunction around the area
  • Weakness and/or Swelling: Often secondary to trauma, nerve damage or pain

When pain seems to be coming from the knee your Chiropractor will examine your anatomical components. In addition to the knee joint, the low back, pelvis, hip, ankle and foot need to be examined due to the direct influence they have on the knee and vice versa.

Your Chiropractor will discuss your symptoms with you, take a detailed case history and perform a thorough examination. Once a diagnosis has been confirmed, specific treatment options can be discussed. Treatment generally involves adjustments to your pelvis and low back to reduce joint restriction, inflammation and joint mobilisation of the hip, knee and foot to restore normal joint function and soft tissue work to the tight/weak musculature which will reduce tension and further reduce pain. Your chiropractor will also recommend work changes and/or rest, the use of ice packs, stretches and home exercises. It is important to be patient with your care as it can take weeks and months of treatment to improve.
