Arthritis

The word Arthritis means inflammation of the joint. There are 100+ types of known arthritis, but Osteoarthritis (OA) is by far the most common and generally affects elderly patients. However, some forms of arthritis can affect people at a very early age.

If you suffer with arthritis something has gone wrong with the joint(s) in the affected area of your body. What goes wrong depends on what type of arthritis you have. It could be that the cartilage is wearing away, a lack of fluid, infection, auto-immunity (your body attacking itself) or a combination of these factors.

Osteoarthritis:

Symptoms develop slowly and get worse as time goes on. Pain presents itself in a joint either during or after use, or after a period of inactivity. Symptoms include pain, swelling, stiffness, loss of flexibility and some patients report experiencing a grating sensation when they use the joint. The most common affected joints are in the hips, hands, knees and spine. It can be associated with old trauma or history of repetitive impact/loading to the joint.

After a thorough assessment by your chiropractor your treatment will be adapted to suit your age, build, pain levels and general health. Using adjustments and joint mobilisation your chiropractor can help with the pain, stiffness and joint restriction. By building strength via home exercises and stretches the recurrence can be reduced. Advice on nutrition may also be given. Exercises and stretches to help manage the recurrence and possible progression of the Arthritis. Your treatment progress depends on whether your problem is acute or chronic and on your age and general health. Chiropractic treatment is recommended as an adjunct to core osteoarthritis treatments.
